Polydioxanone (PDO) Threads

PDO threads are micro sutures that have been used in dentistry and medicine for decades.  These threads are complete resorbable and promote the generation of new collagen.  It is completely antigenic in humans.  PDO threads are used to smooth wrinkled skin by replacing and adding collagen and elastin to damaged areas to restore the healthy foundation to your skin. The thread is fully absorbed in 4-6 months with results lasting from 12-24 months.

PDO threads work by building your own collagen through the body’s natural healing process, reducing fat, and also creating biostimulation so your skin develops better blood flow, tightening the skin, and improving the skin texture and look.  PDO threads are categorized as smooth or barbed/cog.

Smooth threads are typically smaller than a human hair.  Barbed threads are made of the same material, but they are much greater in diameter and have minute barbs or cogs that engage the skin and create a lifting action when deployed.

PDO threads are the safest and non-allergenic of all injectable facial products. They produce the longest lasting results and create the most natural look. Multiple treatments are often required to obtain the desired result depending on age and skin quality.

Smooth PDO Threads

  • Forehead: Reduces the horizontal lines running across the forehead creating a smoother and healthier look.

  • Glabella Lines (the angry 11’s): Depending on age and severity, smooth threads placed in this area can produce an immediate and profound effect.  PDO threads will smooth this difficult area more than just Botox alone.

  • Eyebrows: Eyebrows can be lifted, shaped, and tightened with a variety of techniques including Botox, smooth threads, and lifting threads.

  • Temple: Hollow temples are best treated with smooth PDO threads.  This is not an area to be treated with fillers due to the high vascularity of the region.  Multiple treatments are usually required.

  • Crow’s Feet: Tear troughs and crow’s feet are treated with a special “bluntcannula” PDO thread technique. The best and longest lasting results are obtained by treating with Botox and PDO threads simultaneously.

  • Cheeks: The lower cheek areas are particularly susceptible to the ravages of sun, age, acne and constant muscle usage.  PDO smooth threads are highly effective in reducing wrinkles and restoring smooth and healthy skin in this area.

  • Lip Borders: When PDO smooth threads are placed in the lip borders, the borders immediately pop out, displaying more of the patient’s natural lip. These threads create a sharp lipstick line that stops makeup from bleeding into the lip lines.  PDO threads are more economical and longer lasting than either Botox or fillers.  By treating the lips with PDO threads first, less filler is usually required, and the result is more natural.

  • Smoking (Straw) Lines: Rhytid lines form around the mouth from natural lip function.  They are more prominent in smokers and are often referred to as smokers’ lines.  Regardless of the cause, they are annoying to women seeking a sharp lipstick line.  Smooth PDO threads are the most natural and effective way to eliminate these lines.  The results are profound and can last for years.

  • Lip Volume: PDO threads create natural lip volume improvement. Threads alone create more natural, fuller lips for those seeking a subtle change.

  • Chin Tightening: The skin under the chin begins to sag early as a result of gravity and loss of collagen. When threads are placed under the chin, they have the same tightening effect as hooking the springs onto a trampoline. As healing occurs, the collagen development tightens this loose skin.

  • Neck: Loose skin and horizontal lines in the neck can be dramatically reduced or eliminated with threads.

  • Acne Scars: PDO threads are possibly the fastest, most economical, and natural way to reduce and eliminate acne scarring.  Placement of the threads actually severs much of the scar tissue as well as creating tissue healing and massive collagen production.  Threads can be used in conjunction with other treatment modalities to obtain the most beautiful result possible.

  • Tear Troughs: These are the lines under the eyes that define the lower border of under eye bags.  These have been tricky areas to treat in the past due to the nature of fillers to absorb water.  By placing threads in this area, we are able to restore collagen and tighten the skin, dramatically reducing the prominence of the tear trough.
